SHREWSBURY HERE WE COME!

SHREWSBURY HERE WE COME!

After lots and lots of hard work we are going to open our new pop up shop in Shrewsbury just in time for Christmas shopping. We will be opening the doors at 12 noon on Saturday 31st of October after lots of sanding, painting, arranging (and re-arranging) units and hanging artwork to create a beautiful space full of beautiful things. Just like Wolverhampton the new shop will showcase artists and designers from across Shropshire and the West Midlands. Trading as ‘Shop in the Square Shrewsbury’ the new shop is in Wyle Cop which is a street full of lovely independent shops and cafes. We will be stocking an eclectic mix of quality handmade items from luxury candles, chocolate and distinct bone china ceramics to upcycled furniture and a range of quirky jewellery, cards, fine art and accessories. Supporting over 20 micro businesses, Shop in the Square manager Charlotte Clark has sourced the very best talent from the Wolverhampton shop and across Shropshire to bring unique gifts to the people of Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury attracts a lot of visitors from across the region and has a great range of independent traders so when we were looking for a second location in the region we just knew we had to be in Shrewsbury. The Shop in the Square team, led by Charlotte are absolutely delighted to have transformed an empty unit into a fabulous space full of unusual gifts and we look forward to welcoming you very very soon! THE UPS AND DOWNS OF A MODERN DAY WOMBLE

THE UPS AND DOWNS OF A MODERN DAY WOMBLE

#plasticbags has been trending this week and in the days leading up to October 5th I found myself greedily helping myself to free bags whereas normally I tend to cram as much as possible into a few bags so I don’t have to add to my plastic bag mountain. But my carefully amassed collection of mismatched bag will now start to dwindle following the legislation that compels large stores to charge for plastic bags in order to reduce waste. There are lots of good things of course, we have seen the pictures of what plastic bags do to marine life and how they clog up landfill.  And Supermarkets will have to give any ‘profits’ to good causes so large and small charities could benefit. But what about the down side? We will all have to now go out and buy the correct sized bin liners (which I guess will be good news for bin liner manufacturers) and I can’t see a future for doll plastic bag holders.  In fact mine could well find its way to my local charity shop to join hundreds of other unloved dolls. And I am going to have to get organised with my Bags for Life which live in the back of the car – they just don’t always make it to the supermarket. And who can be bothered to take a split one back to be replaced, personally I always seem to be in the wrong supermarket. Don’t get me wrong I truly am the Queen of Recycling! A positive little Womble, going round the bins tutting and removing card and plastic deposited... read more

Wonderland in Wolverhampton!

Wonderland in Wolverhampton!

Surely every young girl and quite a few boys will be familiar with Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland? Even if they do not know the book perhaps they saw the excellent Walt Disney fantasy film directed by Tim Burton. Those striking images of the frantic white rabbit, the mad hatter’s tea party, the evil Queen of Hearts, the Cheshire cat have inspired everyone from tattoo artists to bakers and products from wedding dresses to jewellery. This timeless children’s book was published in 1865 so is 150 years old this year. To celebrate the fact that this publishing sensation has never been out of print and has been translated into at least 176 languages, Shop in the Square designers have created two stunning displays one in both windows in the Shop right in the centre of Queen Square in Wolverhampton and one in Waterstones just round the corner. Filled with beautiful hand crafted items will you be tempted by an Alice cushion, cards or original art? There is a stunning felt rabbit, a leather bag with red hearts, a Cheshire cat door stop and shop manager Charlotte has been firing up her kiln to produce some more of her popular Alice tea set. People have loved the displays and whether for a treat or a present the Alice items are flying out of the door. It’s sometimes said that Lewis Carroll’s Alice books were the origin of all later children’s literature. Prior to 1865 almost all children’s books were written to make a moral point. In Alice, for the first time, we find a child taking part in a fun story... read more

Becky of That’s Sew Becky – Update

She designs and makes the most adorable baby shoes, skirts and bags from the luxurious and famous Liberty print fabric. Due to the fabric being from the arts fabric ranges she has a limited stock and the supply is hard to find so each piece is carefully and lovingly crafted with the knowledge that each is different and limited, when the fabric has gone it’s gone. The quality of the fabric is fantastic and always high which is why she chooses to use it, only the best will do. The shoes are painstakingly sewn together and quality checked throughout to Becky’s high standard. They make fantastic gifts for first time parents and always seem to be given by adoring aunties, uncles and grandparents. They are something to be treasured and kept as mementos. Becky is also offering a service to create a personalised frame for the shoes so that once they have been worn they can be kept safe and clean forever. Her bags and purses are also made from Liberty print and this is due to the robust nature of the silk and cotton, she knows from experience of her first make-up bag being one she made and abused that they can last for over 5 years, the inside gets a bit mucky but the outside is still as glorious as ever. They are fantastically priced and are in lots of different fabrics so make idea gifts for both men and women alike. The skirts she makes are so cute too and we all want one for ourselves. They come in 3 styles one high end style which... read more
